Washington, CT — September 22, 2025
A stubborn wildfire that has been burning for nearly three weeks in the rugged terrain of Steep Rock Preserve is now largely contained, thanks to the coordinated efforts of multiple firefighting agencies. The blaze, which has scorched approximately 15 acres of forest, continues to smolder in deep layers of forest debris known as “duff”—a thick accumulation of decaying leaves, pine needles, and wood that hasn’t seen fire activity in decades.

The fire, located along a steep cliff in a remote section of the preserve, has proven challenging due to its terrain and the depth of the burn. Crews from the Washington Fire Department, DEEP Forestry, and mutual aid partners from Warren, Northville, Roxbury, Bantam, and others have been working tirelessly to contain the fire and prevent further spread. A 3-inch hose line stretching over 3,000 feet was hand-carried and deployed deep into the woods to support suppression efforts—an impressive logistical feat given the rugged conditions.

Deputy Fire Chief Bernie Meehan, who has been providing updates from the scene, noted that despite a half-million gallon soak-down over the weekend, lingering hot spots remain. Firefighters continue to perform wet downs in the area, and officials say the fire is unlikely to spread unless strong winds develop. Meehan added that the fire may continue to smolder until the first snowfall, unless a soaking rain arrives soon.

Fortunately, I was able to tell fire officials today that there is good consensus in the forecast department predicting 1–2 inches of rain over the region in the coming days, which could significantly aid suppression efforts and help extinguish the remaining hot spots.

Crews have focused their efforts on the east and southeast flanks of the fire, where back burns have been conducted to widen control lines. On the west side, the fire has held steady, and a sprinkler system has been installed at the ridge top for added protection. The entire Steep Rock Preserve remains closed to visitors until further notice.

Residents in the area should expect to see and smell smoke for some time, as the fire continues to smolder beneath the forest floor. Even with soaking rain, there is still a chance the fire can survive underground and eventually rekindle. Officials urge caution and ask the public to respect trail closures and avoid the preserve while crews complete their work.
