After a frigid stretch, there is confidence a more zonal, southwest flow will allow for an increase in temperatures through the weekend and into early next week.

To be clear on expectations, this means highs closer to 50 degrees than 70 degrees, but if you are sick of snow and ice, this is certainly as start…

This winter has been colder than the last few overall, and perhaps most notably, there was a lack of true January or February “thaw” that we have seen so many times in recent years. While the definition of winter thaw is probably different for everyone, to me it means consecutive days at least 20 degrees above average. For example, our Western CT climate station saw February temperatures reach 66 in 2022 and 67 in 2023 amid these thaws. Last year in 2024, there were a few different stretches where it was in the 50s for consecutive days in January. By contrast, January 2025’s warmest day was the 1st, when temperatures reached 50 degrees right around midnight. That was it… The highest temperature recorded so far in February was a mere 46 degrees.

So while it will warm up, and may even get close to 50 degrees early next week, it does look like we spike down again towards the beginning of March. It looks like a bit of a roller-coaster to start what is climatologically the wildest weather month in CT. March is the only month we have recorded temperatures above 90 and below zero!
