The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has issued an Air Quality Alert for several counties—including Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex, and Northern New London—in effect from 11 AM to 11 PM on Wednesday. This alert is due to expected elevated levels of ground-level ozone, a pollutant that can pose health risks, especially during warm and sunny conditions.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) is forecast to exceed 100, which falls into the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” category. This means that while the general public is not likely to be affected, children, older adults, and individuals with respiratory conditions such as asthma or heart disease may experience health effects and should consider limiting prolonged or strenuous outdoor activities.
In addition to ozone, elevated wildfire smoke from ongoing fires in Canada has been detected in the upper atmosphere. While this smoke is expected to remain aloft and not impact surface air quality, it may contribute to hazy skies, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours. This could lead to another hazy sunset, similar to what some areas have experienced recently.

Health officials recommend that sensitive individuals monitor symptoms and consult with their healthcare providers if they experience any breathing difficulties. Staying indoors during peak afternoon hours and using air purifiers can also help reduce exposure.
For real-time air quality updates, residents can visit AirNow.gov or check local environmental agency websites.
