A complex weather system is moving through the area today, bringing a mix of rain, gusty winds, and even the potential for some snow in certain spots later tonight. There has been some buzz today about “inches” of accumulation in Western areas… here is the latest:

Rain Continues Through the Day Thursday

A steady and beneficial rain will persist throughout the day. It may become a bit more “on and off” as the afternoon wears on, but rain rates are expected to pick up again this evening. Around a half inch to an inch of rain has been recorded across much of Connecticut.

Windy Conditions Especially Along the Coast

Strong easterly winds that developed overnight will stick around through the day, especially along the coast. Gusts are expected to reach between 25 and 35 mph. After midnight, winds are expected to shift out of the WSW with gusts still in the 20 to 35 mph range. Interestingly, this wind shift with a southerly component will bring in cooler air. Not our usual setup!

Evening Brings Cooler Air and First Flake Chances Inland

As the low-pressure system tracks northward this evening, colder air will filter into the region. Temperatures in interior areas and especially high elevation areas may approach 32-35 degrees. This drop in temperature could flip precipitation to a brief period of snow in those locations.

As far as accumulation, a slushy coating is possible in some of the hill towns, especially in far Western areas. Overall, though, no meaningful snow accumulation is expected in CT.

Key Takeaways

  • Rain: Light to moderate rain is expected most of the day, with rain potentially heavier at times again Thursday night. Total rainfall of 1.0 to 2.0 inches in many places. Great news!
  • Winds: Gusty along the coast, peaking at 25–35 mph. No major wind issues expected.
  • Snow: Snow may mix in at times Thursday night. No meaningful snow accumulation is expected.
